Silent Boundaries
Hanmi Museum, Seoul, Korea, 2018
Silent Boundaries depicts a series of redevelopment areas designated for imminent removal, which Ki ho Park photographed from 2013 to 2017. These areas include the Donuimun area, Mia-dong, Bugahyeondong, and Gireum-dong. The series title ‘Silent Boundaries’ implies ‘a physical boundary’ between general area and the redevelopment zones, one day designated to be demolished all at once. It could also signify the ‘limits and bounds of life,’ cast over the evicted residents. Park’s images are vanished vestiges of the past and at the same time marks of the memory that have remained in our connection with photographic subjects.
His early memories and personal sensibility are condensed into the series, and reflected both in form and matter in a rather immediate style. In addition, after the accumulated experiences ranging from photo journalism to commercial photography, the series demonstrates both the diligence of journalistic photos and the refinement of commercial ones at the same time, validating Park’s photographic career of 30 years.
